"Many things we need can wait. The child cannot. Now is the time his bones are formed, his mind developed. To him we cannot say tomorrow, his name is today." Gabriela Mistral Comprehension instruction is a critical component of every teaching day. Students need to be taught strategies for understanding what they read or for what is read to them from the time they can first listen to a book, and should not be held back until they can perfectly decode every word on a page. Keep these tips in mind for teaching comprehension in your classroom: Have students formulate and ask questions. Select and use only the very best questions in the T.E. if attention spans are waning. Use a graphic organizer to track information. (i.e., Thinking Maps, Venn Diagrams, etc.) Dont fish for answers (eliciting many incorrect responses before the correct one is given confuses many students or encourages them to check out of the discussion mentally.) Just give them the answer if theyre off track. Model thinking aloud-show them how a skilled reader thinks. Model re-reading to locate information. Make connections and encourage students to do so (text to self, text to text, text to world.) Build background knowledge before reading. Set a purpose for reading. (KWL Charts- Know, Want to Know, Want to Learn is a great strategy for improving reading comprehension.) Go to: HYPERLINK "http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Language_Arts/Reading/RDG0016.html" http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Language_Arts/Reading/RDG0016.html for a lesson plan on KWL Charts. Have students make predictions and validate them by checking the text for accuracy. Use more visualization and visual aids to illustrate the text, or to make it come alive. 9:RSgiv°ziWEW3#h_RPhu6CJOJQJ^JaJ#h_RPhV%6CJOJQJ^JaJ#h_RPh4E&6CJOJQJ^JaJ h_RPh4E&CJOJQJ^JaJ h_RPhuCJOJQJ^JaJ&hhu56CJOJQJ^JaJ hthuCJOJQJ^JaJ#hhu5CJOJQJ^JaJ#hhB5CJOJQJ^JaJh25CJOJQJ^JaJ7jhht5CJOJQJU^JaJmHnHu 9:RSC D > ? | } h^hgdV% & FgdV%h^hgd -DM gd2 -DM gd20 1 B D L W m j͸͸reeWeJ9J!jh2hOJQJU^Jh2hOJQJ^Jh2hT;6OJQJ^Jh2hT;OJQJ^Jh2hV%6OJQJ^Jh2h_RPOJQJ^Jh2QOJQJ^Jh2hV%OJQJ^J'h2h26CJOJQJaJmH sH (h2h2CJOJQJ^JaJmH sH (h2hdhCJOJQJ^JaJmH sH h2hIQ6OJQJ^Jhu6CJOJQJ^JaJ A B EF & FgdV%h^hgdV% jklFGھh~htjhtUh2h_gOJQJ^Jh2hV%OJQJ^Jh2hOJQJ^Jh2h0JOJQJ^J!jh2hOJQJU^J'jh2hOJQJU^J6&P1h:pii,/ =!8"8#8$8% DyK bhttp://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Language_Arts/Reading/RDG0016.htmlyK http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Language_Arts/Reading/RDG0016.htmlPDd` Z C 6Anrf_stacked_bwb1%M`m úW~Anv1%M`m úWPNG IHDR-ndnPLTE???ߟ@@@ 000___```PPP///OOOpppoooJBxwq}aZĻUN掉搐le3-SttwA:iwwwlfIHO}.)K&VybKGDH cmPPJCmp0712Hs;IDATx^b8VNNӹg[z'[ERIil"?
