Most SSE parents in Elko work in the service industries, stores and mines. SSE staff currently teach five sections of kindergarten, and provide an Extended Day Kindergarten (EDK) for students who score lowest on the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) test. (All kindergarteners take the Pre-K PALS assessment at the beginning of the year. After six weeks of instruction the PALS-K is administered.) Once the child reaches a proficient level, they are no longer required to attend the extended portion of their day. SSE has a Title 1 teacher assigned to provide 2nd-4th graders a pullout reading program. Two teachers and two teacher aides are assigned to K-6 for English Language Learners (ELL) instruction. Three teachers and a part-time speech pathologist provide special education services. Music, physical education, art, and library services are also provided at the levels recommended by the ECSD. Two teachers have served the Northeastern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program (NNRPDP) for the past three years as professional development site facilitators. One 3rd grade teacher serves as the site facilitator for NELIP. These individuals have attended training in a variety of subject areas and have returned to SSE providing presentations of the information to the entire staff.
