Lovelock Elementary School is located in the rural community of Lovelock, Nevada. Lovelock is a small farming, ranching, and mining town with the next nearest community approximately 60 miles away. The community offers minimal shopping and activities for its residents. As in most small, rural communities the school is the center of the majority of the community activities. Because of a declining economy Lovelock is struggling to survive financially. Mining is a "boom or bust" industry and the economy of Lovelock has been based on precious metal producing mines: one gold, one silver. These mines have recently slowed production, directly affecting the local economy. The school's free and reduced lunch level has been approximately 40% for the last 5 years. This year the free and reduced level has jumped to 49.2%; indications are that the poverty rate will continue to rise. Since 1997-1998 the population of Lovelock has declined by approximately 24%, the direct result of the decreased mining production. The people who secured employment elsewhere or had adequate funds moved on, leaving behind a population beginning to live in greater poverty.
