Lyon County School District is supporting Reading First activities in the following school:

• Fernley Elementary

Demographics:

Lyon County School District encompasses the Dayton, Silver Springs, Yerington, Smith Valley and Fernley areas. Fernley, 35 miles east of Reno, is the fastest growing of the communities, currently housing a population of approximately 14,000 residents. Fernley has served as a bedroom community to Reno/Sparks with many parents commuting to their jobs. Recently there has been an influx of warehouse and distribution type businesses resulting in a growth spurt of low and middle-income subdivisions and increased school enrollment. Fernley Elementary School (FES) is one of two elementary schools and is located in the older area of Fernley. FES is surrounded by low income housing, resulting in a lower socio-economic population than the other elementary school, Cottonwood Elementary.

There are currently 34 certified teachers at FES. Twenty-nine percent have MasterÂ’s Degrees, with fifteen percent having 0-2 years experience, thirty-five percent having 3-10 years experience, twenty-four percent with 11-20 years experience, and twenty-six percent with 21+ years experience.
