Front-Loading Vocabulary

One of the ways students learn new words is through rich and lively vocabulary instruction.  While our core reading programs do provide some routines for teaching students new words, many students require:

  • More direct and explicit teaching of word meanings;

  • More modeling from teacher on how words are used;

  • More practice using the words;

  • More feedback about their progress;

  • And, more time to interact and own the vocabulary.

The following documents explain an instructional routine for front-loading vocabulary.  The routine strategically pre-teaches critical unknown words so that students can fully interact with instruction from the core reading program and comprehend text.
