90-Minute Block

Reading First schools must establish a 90 minute or more block of time for reading instruction in all kindergarten through third grades. This means one continuous block of time devoted to teaching reading from a core reading program without interruption. Interruptions take students out of the direct and systematic instruction. The following examples are considered interruptions:

  • Lunch
  • Special Classes (art, music, P.E., library, etc.)
  • ELL pull-out (during whole group or differentiated instruction)
  • Counseling
  • Recess
  • Computer Lab
  • School Assemblies

Click on the links below to find the specific components included in the 90 minute block for your core reading program.

The following presentation is intended for use at Nevada Reading First schools. It is designed as a 2-3 hour workshop that introduces differentiated instruction during the 90 minute reading block.

The following resources are provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s First Annual National Reading First Conference.
