Intervention Programs

Intervention Programs

The National Reading Council's book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children (1998) states “many children learn to read with good instruction, but some do not” (p.247). Children who experience difficulty learning to read require additional instruction usually called an intervention. Intervention programs are designed to prevent reading problems before children need remedial help in later grades. There is substantial research that indicates reading problems are preventable for most children if problems are diagnosed early and children participate in intensive interventions that accelerate learning in a small-group setting focusing on the essential elements of reading instruction (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).

The Nevada Reading First Management Team conducted an extensive review of intervention programs and has selected the following programs that can be implemented in Nevada Reading First schools for the 2005-2006 school year. No other programs will be included on this list.
