The action planning process used for Nevada Reading First schools is based on what other successful Reading First schools do on a day-to-day basis.

We define successful schools based on student data, specifically schools with high challenge (high numbers of intensive students entering kindergarten) and high achievement (on progress monitoring and outcome data. This is HOW the students do.

Once the schools were identified, the we looked at the day-to-day practices. This is WHAT the adults do.

Combined with what we know about scientifically-based reading research (SBRR), we found eight broad areas requiring attention:

  • Instructional materials;
  • Instructional intensity;
  • Professional development;
  • Assessment;
  • Data utilization;
  • Principal leadership;
  • Reading coach leadership; and
  • Resource allocation.

These areas are described in more detail in the Best Practices Handbook.

The following PowerPoint presentations are used in the "Action Plans for Results" workshop. These items are here for your reference and do not need to printed out.
