Owning Words for Literacy™ Workshops

As part of the Nevada Reading First Grant, two different workshops on vocabulary development (Owning Words for Literacy™ I & II) have been created and are offered by Dr. Meggin McIntosh for interested educators in all counties of the State of Nevada throughout the 2006 - 2007school year.

The new Owning Words for Literacy site can be viewed at www.OwningWordsforLiteracy.com

Who?

In accordance with Reading First grant guidelines, K-3 general educators and K-12 special educators are given first priority in registration. However, once the 4 weeks-prior-to-the-week-of-the-workshop window opens, other educators are invited to register.

Cost?

There is no cost to participants in the Owning Words for Literacy™ workshops. Teachers will receive a high quality, research-based book on vocabulary development, an extensive packet of handouts and materials to support the concepts presented in the workshop, and access to various resources available online through Meggin's website.

How many participants?

Space is limited to 30 educators per workshop. We expect every workshop to fill rapidly, so don’t delay in registering.

Part I & Part II?

We hope that teachers will choose to take both workshops I & II, but it is not required. Each workshop will be a “stand alone,” but participating in both workshops is preferable for deeper understanding of the strategies and concepts presented.

Where?

Owning Words for Literacy™ I and Owning Words for Literacy™ II will be offered at least once in each of Nevada’s 17 counties during the 2006 - 2007 academic year. See the calendar for the dates and locations that are already scheduled.

Taking the workshop in a different county

You may register for Owning Words for Literacy™ in any county, not just the one in which you teach.

Credit?

If you are taking Owning Words for Literacy™ I or Owning Words for Literacy™ II during non-contract time, then you may earn ½ Nevada Department of Education recertification-relicensing credit. University credit is not available.

Times?

Depending on the needs and recommendations of the host school district, Owning Words for Literacy™ workshops are being offered in various formats (e.g., during the school day, after school, Saturdays). Generally, each workshop is about 7½ hours in length.

How do I register?

Interested educators should register by contacting Sue Vaughn at 775.853.3510 (sue@meggin.com).

Confirming registration?

Your registration will be acknowledged via email as soon as it has been received and processed. If you do not receive an email regarding your registration within a week of having sent it, then please contact us, because it means that we did not receive it.

Canceling a registration?

It is VERY important to let us know if you are not going to be able to attend. This will allow another person to register in your spot. Please contact Meggin or Sue as soon as possible if you find you cannot attend.

Please note: Registrants who “no-show” may not be able to secure a spot in a future Owning Words for Literacy™ workshop until a week prior to the start of the workshop.

Substitutes?

Reading First does not have additional funds to pay for substitutes for teachers who need to be “subbed out.” Please explore your school’s and district’s options to find out what might be available to support your quest for professional development.
